TEACHING & OUTREACH: EUREKA

EUREKA! with Girls Inc. Holyoke

The EUREKA! Program is a summer program for middle-school through high school girls to teach them about science, health, and self-care.

2015 will be the 3rd year (3rd cohort starting, 3rd year for the first cohort).

2015

Jenny Ross (UMass Physics), Anne Gershenson (UMass Biochemistry and Molecular Biology), Maria Kilfoil (UMass Physics), and Sarah Perry (UMass, Chemical Engineering) ran a 3-day course on fluids and physics culminating in an egg drop into cornstarch and water (oobleck). We were able to drop an egg from 30 feet into 10 cm of oobleck, and it survived!

2014

Chef Simon Stevenson (UMass, Bake Shop Manager and Pastry Chef) worked with Jenny on the polymer nature of gluten and glycogens in dough. We also discussed heat transfer of baking.

2013

Jenny Ross (UMass Physics), Anne Gershenson (UMass Biochemistry and Molecular Biology), and Danny Schnell (UMass Biochemistry and Molecular Biology) ran a 2-day course on light, energy, wavelength, and color.
