TEACHING & OUTREACH: BIOBOOTCAMP

BioBootCamp

To train physicists in the complicated experimental procedures of life science research, we run a week-long training camp each January. In the spirit of Studio Physics, the Boot Camp contains lecture and hands-on training where students directly use the lessons from the lectures. Powerpoints available upon request. Topics include:

 

Monday: Keeping a Notebook, Laboratory Math and Units, Making Buffers, pHing buffers.

Working with bacteria, Sterile Technique, Transforming Bacteria

 

Tuesday: Microtubules, Motors, MAPs

Microscopy

 

Wednesday: Protein Purification

Kinesin-1 and MAP65

 

Thursday: Biochemical Assays: SDS-Page gel.

Microscopy Assays: Gliding Assays and Bundling Assays.

 

Friday: Data Analysis of Images with ImageJ, Analyzing gels, Analyzing Images, Analyzing Movies

Every year, we make t-shirts for the groups of students in the camp.
